The snake in the nest - how I became an axe murderer

The snake in the nest

I have the pleasure of working a lot from home, and as a part of my morning routine I feed the hens and take in the eggs before my second cup of tea. This morning I went out and saw a very concerned hen trying to get into her favourite nest to lay her egg, when I looked into the nest  a big corn snake stared at me, the the big yellow snake had swallowed one of our eggs and looked dazed from just having fed. I panicked, I was alone at home and could not think of any of our closest neighbours being around either, the snake was there and was obviously going to come back for more if I left it there to escape, and our hen, Greta, really needed to be in that particular nest to lay her egg. I must admit that in our house my husband is the killer of pests such as mice, rats and snakes that are bothering us.

I realised that now, I had to deal with the snake myself. Bella the cat and Mino the dog had left when they smelled the snake and it was me, Greta the hen and the snake. I pulled myself together and got  cane and a big axe. I hit the snake with the cane and pulled it out of the nest and placed it on a tree stump and got the axe. Obviously you cannot close your eyes when you try to behead a snake with an axe so I aimed and managed to separate the head from the body of the snake. Pretty gross.

I had killed the snake though. I was shaking from the adrenaline rush but actually felt very empowered by this experience of swinging an axe and kill the snake that took one of our eggs. I tried to do a high five with Greta the hen, who had jumped into the nest as soon as the snake was gone but Greta was busy laying one of her brown, big eggs I enjoy for breakfast every morning.

The weapon

This serves as a warning to all snakes that plan to come here and steal my breakfast eggs, I have killed once and I can do it again!
